- W4386906736 abstract "In this issue of the Journal of Vascular Surgery, Mirzaie et al 1 Mirzaie A.A. Cooper M.A. Weaver M.L. et al. National Institutes of Health funding among vascular surgeons is rare. J Vasc Surg. 2023; 78: 845-851 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF Scopus (0) Google Scholar show that, in 2022, only 1% of vascular surgeons receive National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, with female surgeons representing 37% of funded surgeons. They also show that NIH-funded projects covered only seven of 10 Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) research priorities. These data are consistent with prior analyses showing that vascular surgeons received a small proportion (4.2%) of NIH funding to surgeon-scientists, and this rate has not changed since 1995 (4.6% of grant funding in 1995 to 4.2% in 2020); more generally, less than 2% of NIH investigators are surgeon-scientists, despite the need to treat approximately 30% of global diseases with surgical approaches. 2 Nguyen M. Gonzalez L. Newman A. et al. Rates of National Institutes of Health funding for surgeon-scientists, 1995-2020. JAMA Surg. 2023; : e231571 Google Scholar These similar and consistent data highlight an imperative for change to enhance funding to vascular surgeon-scientists. National Institutes of Health funding among vascular surgeons is rareJournal of Vascular SurgeryVol. 78Issue 4PreviewThe National Institutes of Health (NIH) is an essential source of funding for vascular surgeons conducting research. NIH funding is frequently used to benchmark institutional and individual research productivity, help determine eligibility for academic promotion, and as a measure of scientific quality. We sought to appraise the current scope of NIH funding to vascular surgeons by appraising the characteristics of NIH-funded investigators and projects. In addition, we also sought to determine whether funded grants addressed recent Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) research priorities. Full-Text PDF" @default.
