While history sometimes offered respite, comfort or escape from current woes, it could also provide vital examples of good and bad practice to inform present-day public life. For Fraser, knowledge of the past was not entirely incontrovertible or immutable then but required careful archiving and regular re-presentation by scholars in order to take on its full meaning and purpose. Ultimately, this chapter shows how Fraser, a prime ‘public historian’ of his day, is best viewed on his own terms. His secular, boyhood passion for history combined with a later evangelical, pastoral wish to educate and make available, historical accounts and books for as many as possible. Both are vital towards understanding one key legacy of his: his formative influence on the founding of the Highlands’ first town library, in Inverness, in 1706." @default.
