- W4386961567 abstract "This coda focusses on Virginia Woolf’s 1919 bildungsroman, Night and Day. It highlights the significance of the novel’s opening reflections on Galton’s major work on intelligence, Hereditary Genius (1869) – a work which traced Woolf’s own family lineage in its effort to prove the heritability of intellectual gifts. The novel’s heroine, Katharine Hilbery, attempts to escape such determinism by turning away from literary ideals of creativity and inspiration (her father was a famous poet), but she affirms the Galtonian model of intelligence in another sense: she becomes a mathematician, the supreme type of Galtonian genius. In addition, the chapter reads Night and Day as a meditation on the implications of the cultural shift from humanist and Romantic ideals of genius to a post-humanist conception of intelligence that privileges mathematical logic. This is a shift that the novel tries to celebrate, but Woolf’s underlying ambivalence toward it shapes the novel’s representations of feminist and democratic politics." @default.
