- W4386962578 abstract "This chapter analyses common script analysis tactics used by film and television actors once they are cast in a role. Actors reconstruct their character’s cognitive scaffolding in preparation for their days on set. The author’s interviews with professional Canadian film and television actors suggested three broad approaches to script analysis. First, a “bottom-up” approach relies on the actor’s relatively direct transposition of her quotidian memories into her character’s affective experiences. Second, the “top-down” approaches encourage actors to layer personally evocative imaginary filters, from Jungian archetypes to literary and mythological references, on top of the scripted character to give a vocabulary to character goals and shifts in power dynamics within their character’s scenes. Third, the common and versatile “balanced” approach encourages actors to freely blend personal recollections and imaginary images during script analysis to connect to a scripted character’s lived experiences. Actor Antonio Cayonne likens this kind of bodymind configuration and conceptual blend to the mythical Minotaur: a creature with the body of one beast and the head of another. Ultimately, the actor is free to develop her Intrasubjective appresentations of the scripted character however she deems appropriate, on the firm understanding that whatever empathetic appresentations she develops must be actionable on set." @default.
