- W4386963535 abstract "Neutrons interact with the nucleus and provide a vastly different, often complementary, contrast to X-rays. Most notably, neutrons show high sensitivity for hydrogen and at the same time high penetration for many metals. This renders neutron imaging the technique of choice in many fields of applications, such as archeology, paleontology, materials science, energy storage systems, and many more. Particularly when X-rays cannot provide sufficient contrast and/or penetration, as is often the case for light materials in the presence of dense materials, neutrons are the probe of choice. In this chapter, we review the fundamental principles of neutron imaging with a particular focus on the differences from X-ray imaging. We provide an overview of the typical components of neutron imaging instruments. After setting this basis, we will give a summary of currently established neutron imaging techniques and their applications." @default.
