- W4386970440 abstract "The Black farmers interviewed for this book continue to persist in place. Chapter 6 shows that they’ve done so because they practice imagination, affection, and fidelity. Describing the specific ways that they have come to understand, love, and care for their farms, Black farmers highlighted here show the tremendous power of stewardship virtues, even if they refer to these traits with different verbiage. Like white farmers in Robertson County, these Black farmers highlight stewardship motivations related to economics, family, and religion, too. Echoing the writings of bell hooks, Black farmers also described feelings of “belonging” in their rural, agricultural communities, despite the way the wider world tends to see (or ignore) them. Ultimately, the chapter closes by asserting: “We would be wise to emulate these Black farmers’ examples and efforts. In doing so, we might begin to heal some of our nation’s wounds: wounds of racism, environmental exploitation, economic injustice, and agricultural excess. We may find ways to better serve and love one another and to care for the places we call home. By generously sharing their experiences, these farmers help us see a better way to interact with the earth. They show us a way forward.”" @default.
