- W4386971666 abstract "This concluding chapter summarizes Martin Heidegger's life and views and reflects on the destinies which had shaped him throughout his life. It also notes parallels between Heidegger and Hitler. Each in his own way, Hitler and Heidegger wanted to elevate themselves above the shared human condition. That pretention to be more than human is what the Greeks called “hubris.” Hitler's hubris led Germany into totalitarianism, crime, and ruin. In Heidegger's case, even as it persuaded him to support Hitler's regime, that hubris sparked the grandiose hope of revolutionizing philosophy, of becoming the spiritual master of his age, of guiding Germany beyond metaphysics, even if that meant striding in sorrow across a planet in ashes. As it was for Hitler, who suffered from depression toward the end of 1942, hubris was the cause of many of the philosopher's torments." @default.
