- W4386972103 abstract "The chapter examines early forms of review journalism in the seventeenth century before concentrating on an in-depth study of the Monthly Review and the Critical Review, two monthly periodicals whose authority as literary and intellectual guides stood unchallenged in the mid-eighteenth century. The chapter looks at the extrinsic factors supporting the two magazines’ operation, such as the convention of reviewers’ anonymity, the fortuitous but hardly justified non-applicability of the copyright law permitting the publication of hefty extracts of published books, and the industrial army of talented reviewers gathered in London from all parts of Britain and Ireland. Equally significant were the material textuality of the pages and the stylistic features of the reviewers’ texts accompanying the quotations and extracts. The chapter also includes a case study of the enthusiastic reviews in the Monthly Review and the Critical Review of works which have come to be recognised as constituting the ‘Scottish Enlightenment’." @default.
