- W4386972191 abstract "Chapter 2 examines narratives following the life of Ishi, a Native American who was given the moniker “the last wild Indian in North America” by his biographer Theodora Kroeber. The story of Ishi comes primarily through the account written by Kroeber, who used notes from her husband Alfred Kroeber, the eminent anthropologist who studied and cared for Ishi while employing him in the Hearst Museum of Anthropology in San Francisco from 1911 to his death in 1916. Ishi lived through the extinction event of his own people, the Yahi of North-Eastern California. He was cast as a “last man” figure but also romanticized as an original Californian formed by the sun-swept land. This chapter looks at the narratives and imagery associated with Ishi in order to reconstruct concepts of extinction and idealization connected to Indigenous peoples that circulated in Ishi’s time. I also study how psychoanalytic concepts of trauma, Freudian theories of the origins and ends of humanity, and Indigenous ideas of grief became important to Alfred Kroeber as he worked with Ishi." @default.
