- W4386972394 abstract "In this chapter, the artist Ala Younis presents her multimedia art project Al-Bahitun which highlights the link between nationalised knowledge and oil wealth in Iraq. Modern flats in high-rise buildings, plots of land, customs exemptions on Mercedes sedans, as well as scholarships and books were part of a larger scheme of incentives offered by the Ba‘ath regime to scientists and graduates to ensure they work in Iraq after completing their education. This building up of local knowledge, and technical and industrial expertise was seen as a national asset necessary to maximise oil profits after the nationalisation of the Iraq Petroleum Company in 1972. The chapter’s title recalls the sounds that featured in a 1978 Iraqi film, titled Al Bahithun [The Searchers] in which a group of men are hired to journey south of Iraq in search of oil. Sound is also the phonetics of the names of Iraqi oil fields in Nuha al-Radi’s ceramic mural installed in IPC headquarters in Baghdad and discussed in an issue of the oil magazine Al- ‘Amilun fil Naft in the 1960s." @default.
