- W4386972530 abstract "This chapter seeks to respond to the question, ‘how one becomes a transnational actor?’ It defines the transnational subject as a ‘Plural Human’ (Lahire 2011) as they socialise in their family, professional, associational milieux at home and abroad. Transnationalism is henceforth understood as an emergent phenomenon deriving from the efforts made by migrants to overcome the contradictions arising from this multiple embedding. Transnational practices are polyphonic communicative actions (Habermas), bearing the mark of this multiplicity. The second part of this chapter focuses on the role played by migrant social institutions in this process. The latter provide a space for migrants to collectively cope with the contradictions posed by their multi-sited life and invent new ways of being and behaving." @default.
