- W4386975459 abstract "Solar radiation is the major energy source for aquatic ecosystems and is dynamic across time and space. The amount of light available in an aquatic ecosystem is a fundamental regulator of many characteristics, including thermal structure, food web dynamics and organismal behavior, carbon cycling, contaminant toxicity, and economic or social valuations of water quality. Nearly all energy that controls the metabolism of lakes and streams is derived from solar energy via photosynthesis. The amount and spectral composition of light available underwater is a function of the amount incident at the water body surface, scattering or reflection at the water body surface, and processes that attenuate light underwater, including absorption and scattering. Optically active substances, including chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM), algal biomass, and nonalgal particulates, control the diffuse attenuation coefficient (Kd), which is a measure of the rate of attenuation of light through the water column. Light attenuation is commonly measured using a submersible radiometer or approximated using a Secchi disk." @default.
