- W4387006078 abstract "We consider the problem of sizing and siting energy storage in conjunction with transmission system expansion planning under severe renewable drought. We propose a pragmatic three-stage optimization approach to solve this problem. The first stage estimates net energy storage requirement (MW and MWh) along with shadow cost, wherein both the annualized fixed cost and operating cost are minimized. The second stage solves the siting problem wherein location dependent installation costs are modeled. Since there is an interplay between additional transmission system requirement and chosen storage sites, both the existing and proposed network are modeled using a transportation network model. The cost of new line is approximated by its extent of usage. The third and final phase formalizes the expansion plan using the existing Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) approach. Case studies and comparative evaluation with unified approach on IEEE-24 bus system reveal that the method is computationally more efficient; Energy Storage (ESS) required under severe renewable drought is identical in both the staging and unified approach; and the transmission system requirement is comparable to the unified approach." @default.
