- W4387014746 abstract "Extract The lives of the bishops Richard of Wenden1 Richard of Wenden’s early life is a mystery. His toponymic surname provides no clear evidence for his place of origin. His designation of magister, in documents, and Matthew Paris’s description of him as ‘a man of learning’,2 suggests an extensive university education, but there is no evidence for where this occurred. His known career both began and ended in the diocese of Rochester. He was a member of the households of two of his predecessors, Benedict of Sawston and then Henry de Sandford and served the latter as bishop’s official, allowing him to act in certain circumstances as the deputy of the bishop.3 To support him in this work he was collated to the rectory of Bromley in Kent, valued at £20 in 1291 and in the patronage of the bishops of Rochester.4 His service in the diocese presumably led to his election to the see on 26 March 1235, only a month after Henry de Sandford’s death.5 At this point, however, the election ran into difficulties. The archbishop of Canterbury, in this instance Edmund of Abingdon, claimed the right of nomination to the bishopric of Rochester and objected.6 The monks of Rochester appealed to the papacy by 18 August 1235 and entered a long and drawn-out dispute which lasted for nearly three years and included more than one inconclusive hearing before judges-delegate. Finally, on 20 March 1238, Pope Gregory IX decided in favour of Rochester priory, allowing the monks the same rights of episcopal election as other English cathedrals enjoyed by law.7 This ruling was celebrated as a feast day by the monks throughout the Middle Ages." @default.
