- W4387016222 abstract "This concluding chapter reviews the argument that Cicero's identification of Sicily as the province that defined empire marked it as a location for Latin discussions of empire. In medieval texts, Sicily becomes identified with the passage to the future through redemption but also with the recovery of a past, be it the imperium of Augustus in Dante's hands or the recovery of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. There the return of Proserpina renegotiates the relationship between the present and the past based on an interest in redeeming that past in the future, but always with the awareness of the violence that has led to that point. It offers a version of empire that through compromise neither ignores nor glorifies what preceded empire but, instead, turns to the past in the spirit of renegotiation. In the end, Sicily helps create empire by its resistance to it, while Proserpina stands as the embodiment both of the pre-imperial world and of the promise of a renegotiation that acknowledges her story in its entirety." @default.
