- W4387020085 abstract "This chapter situates the composer prior to his 1941 tour. It takes as a point of departure the barely discussed 1935 all-Copland concert in New York, at which El salón México premiered (in its two-piano version). Also analyzed are Copland’s forays into modernism, jazz, and folk music, all of which he addressed in Latin America. At this time, Copland also began developing what he called “New World” music, which would stand up to the European tradition (“universalism”). The fact that many Latin Americans revered the European canon—and took a dim view of U.S. culture—was one of several obstacles confronted by the architects of government-sponsored cultural diplomacy, launched by the Roosevelt administration in 1938 and in which Copland participated." @default.
