- W4387028670 abstract "The bilateral relationship between the US and China has deteriorated significantly in the last few years. To some scholars, the intensifying competition between the two states means that they are on the precipice of, or have already entered, a new Cold War. The Indo-Pacific region is the central front in this escalating rivalry, with the two states clashing over key issues such as the status of Taiwan and maritime rights in the South China Sea. However, the region is not just an arena for US-China competition; it is home to independent states that have their own interests which do not always consistently align with the wishes of the US or China. Amid intensifying competition between the US and China, states in the Indo-Pacific have voiced that they do not want to pick a side. Responding to such claims, both the Trump and Biden administrations have articulated that the US does not ask any state to choose between the US and China. Using two case studies, a Taiwan contingency and trade relationships, this chapter highlights the tension between 1) the US’s claim that it does not ask states to choose the US over China and 2) current trends in US policy." @default.
