- W4387029352 abstract "This concluding chapter explains that for a hundred years and more, certain Hellenists have been intuiting nonverbal communication sporadically as they read their Archaic and Classical Greek texts. All the poets, historians, philosophers, and orators discussed in the previous chapters read their own work aloud. They were performing their work, and as they told their stories, they supplied the gestures that filled in or amplified meaning. However, many readers to this day demur when asked to imagine a single gesture sufficing where a whole clause seems to be needed. One reason for this recalcitrance may be respect for the Greek system of modal particles. Another obstruction in the way of recognizing nonverbal communication in ellipses of syntax is the particularity of scholarly commentary." @default.
