- W4387029357 abstract "This chapter addresses orators, differentiating between forensic oratory and deliberative or display oratory. Oratory had a long history in Greece, and Homer attests the power of persuasion long before the art of oratory receives its formal name. By the late fifth century, a highly developed system of popular courts had evolved at Athens. As a result, men who knew how to compose persuasive arguments gained power for themselves by speaking in assemblies and courts. They also wrote speeches for those less gifted friends and clients who found themselves from time to time forced to appear in court, where deficient persuasiveness could end one's life. The chapter then looks at the works of Alcidamas, Antiphon, Andocides, Lysias, Demosthenes, and Lycurgus. It also considers the Law Code of Gortyn, which describes a series of laws inscribed on a wall that still stands (as reassembled) in Gortyn in Crete." @default.
