- W4387029359 abstract "This chapter explores some passages from Platonic dialogues. Plato in composing his dialogues saw and heard his characters speaking. This use of imagination is especially evident in the so-called dramatic parts of some early and middle dialogues. These are the sections in which speakers are moving themselves to places or becoming acquainted or setting the tone of the ensuing discussion. Socrates' demonstration in the Meno requires him to illustrate his demonstrative adjectives. Once this picture is established, it is easier to picture nods and other expressive body movements in, e.g., Apology, Crito, Symposium, and Republic, where deliberate ellipses in syntax may emulate the speech patterns of an actual person, one who was in Plato's mind as he composed." @default.
