- W4387029500 abstract "Greenhouse horticulture faces the challenge of reducing energy consumption in order to reduce CO2 emissions. In illuminated crops, the transition to LED lighting is crucial. Since the autumn of 2021, the prices of electricity and gas have risen sharply, which further reinforces the urgency of reducing energy consumption for the sector. To enable profitable chrysanthemum cultivation, energy consumption for lighting and heating will have to be reduced. In this project, chrysanthemum varieties Baltica and Pina colada were grown at two temperatures (“normal” and “low” temperatures of 18.5/18°C and 17.5/16.5°C respectively (day/night)) and three light levels (“high”, “ medium” and “low” light with light sums of 9.1, 7.5 and 6.0 mol/m2/day). Plant densities and the long day period were adjusted to the light levels. Lowering the cultivation temperature led to a delay in the development of the flowering stems. The time to harvest was not affected by the light intensity, but a lower light intensity resulted in a lower stem weight. The production expressed in kg fresh weight per m2 decreased considerably with a lower light intensity, proportional to the decrease in plant density. Bio-assays showed no effect of the treatments on the amount of thrips damage and the size of the Botrytis lesions. These results show that chrysanthemums can be grown at reduced energy consumption while maintaining a good stem quality." @default.
