- W4387029981 abstract "Our objective was to evaluate the use of Saccharomyces cerevisiae-derived yeast fraction and multispecie Bacillus products alone or in combination on health and performance during a 56-d feedlot receiving period. Auction-derived crossbred steers (n = 480) were blocked by arrival truckload and randomly assigned to treatments arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial: (1) standard receiving diet only (CON), (2) standard receiving diet with a yeast-derived β-glucan and mannooligosaccharide product derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae primary fermentation (BGM), (3) standard receiving diet with a multispecies Bacillus product (BAC), and (4) standard receiving diet with BGM and BAC (COMBO). Interaction and main effect means were analyzed as a generalized complete block design using a mixed model with 12 pen replicates per treatment. Individual body weight was recorded, and fecal samples were collected from a random subset (2 steers/pen) on d 0 and 56. Supplemented steers were numerically heavier than CON on d 56 (P ≥ 0.26). Gain to feed was improved (P < 0.01) for BGM. Cost of gain (COG) was reduced (P = 0.02) for BGM, BAC, and COMBO. Net return was greater (P = 0.02) for BGM compared with CON. The percent of first cases of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) tended (P = 0.08) to be less, and the percent of second BRD cases was less (P = 0.04) for BAC. Fecal N tended (P = 0.07) to be less for CON. Steers supplemented with direct-fed microbial products had improved COG and improved net return, and BAC improved health. However, feeding BGM and BAC in combination was not advantageous in this sample of the cattle population." @default.
