- W4387029989 abstract "Our objective was to develop an herbage allowance (HA) and nutritive value (NV)-based pasture factor (PF) that could be used to estimate the daily herb- age intake (HI) of stockers grazing bermudagrass [Cyn-odon dactylon (L.) Pers.] pasture as constrained by herb-age mass. We first derived a HA-based PF equation to account for the effects of stocking rate and animal BW on HI. We then calculated the values of critical HA (cHA), the HA level below which HI becomes limiting, for several NV of bermudagrass from the literature. Then, we evaluated the cHA values using data collected from humid, warm-climate regions. By regressing the cHA values against the calculated values of TDN, a proxy for NV, we then developed an equation to compute cHA from TDN daily. Finally, we assessed the response of PF to HA × TDN. We derived the following equation to estimate PF from HA and NV daily: increase toward unity with an increase in HA for all TDN values, with a steeper slope for a greater TDN value. Our HA-NV-based PF equation accounts for the 3-dimensional effects of stocking rate, animal BW, and herbage NV on HI, which have not been accounted for by existing equations of the so-called forage availability factor. By incorporating the cHAi and PFi equations into a HI prediction system, the scientific community can more accurately study the effects of various management and environmental factors on daily herbage mass, HI, and animal performance." @default.
