- W4387048802 abstract "The chapter analyzes a particular genre of the transition memory regime: file-memoirs, that is texts produced by people after reading their secret police files that sought to reestablish their auctorial voice. The opening of the secret police archives was supposed to bring moral and historical clarity to the transition period. Instead, this chapter shows, it engendered a cult for the occult and prolonged the performative power of the secret police into the present. Herta Müller’s and Katherine Verdery’s reflections and actions upon reading their respective files are a case in point of this melodramatic reversal: the performative power of the Securitate is so strong that it forces the subjects of the files to instantiate its logic into the present. By reducing the communist experience to the secret police - as institution and as archive - and by placing it at the core of the memory regime of the transition, postcommunist anticommunism paradoxically continued into the present the logic, the mystique, and the practices of the institution such as the impetus for denunciation, the peddling of secrets and inside information, and the proclivity for spying the other while being suspicious of his/her past. Moreover, this reinforced a perspective on socialism as being linked to the nation state at the cost of erasing its global and internationalist character." @default.
