- W4387052330 abstract "Oxygen consumption reserve (VO2R) and heart rate reserve (HRR) are known to provide equivalent values during incremental exercise tests. Whether they remain similar during extended bouts of aerobic exercise at a constant load is uncertain. Only one previous study has examined this issue, and it found that %HRR increases more than %VO2R as exercise progresses. However, only male participants were studied, and no steps were taken to minimize heat-induced cardiovascular drift. PURPOSE: To determine if %HRR and %VO2R yield similar values during constant-load exercise in men and women when heat stress is moderated. METHODS: Three leg cycling ergometer sessions were performed by 15 men (23.7 + 1.2 yr; mean + SE) and 12 women (22.4 + 1.2 yr): an incremental exercise test to determine VO2max (M = 40.5 + 2.6, F = 35.9 + 2.9 mL/min.kg); a 30-min trial at a workload corresponding to 60% VO2R; a 60-min trial at a workload set at 40% VO2R. A large fan and consumption of cold water were used to reduce heat stress during the two constant-load trials. RESULTS: %HRR and %VO2R increased during constant-workload exercise, and %HRR increased significantly more than did %VO2R (by 9.2 % units at end of vigorous, 30-min trial, and by 7.9 % units at end of moderate, 60-min trial). Women exhibited greater %HRR than %VO2R beginning at 10 min into both trials, while %HRR exceeded %VO2R for men beginning at 15 min of the 30-min trial and at 30 min of the 60-min trial. %HRR values for women were significantly greater than those for men (by 10.0 % units at end of vigorous, 30-min trial, and by 5.4 % units at end of moderate, 60-min trial). CONCLUSIONS: Despite efforts to moderate heat stress, cardiovascular drift during constant-workload exercise results in a greater increase in %HRR than %VO2R, and this is more pronounced in women than men, at least among a sample of recreationally active individuals. The greater increase of HR among women may be related to greater body fat and less effective sweating." @default.
