- W4387052702 abstract "Injuries are frequently reported in elite sports indicating a need for efficient and effective injury treatment during competitions. Previously conducted studies have focused on the epidemiology and prevention of such injuries; however, data surrounding resource use and length of treatment times are scarce. PURPOSE: To estimate the length of time to treat athlete injuries at on-site polyclinics at the Canada Games. METHODS: A Delphi survey was administered to medical practitioners who volunteered during previous Canada Games events. Round 1 of the survey asked participants to estimate the length of time to treat 78 injuries categorized by type and anatomical site during initial and follow-up visits. Round 2 of the survey asked participants to express their agreement with round 1 results using a 7-point Likert scale. Descriptive analysis was performed to calculate frequencies, proportions, medians, and interquartile ranges (IQR). RESULTS: The panel consisted of athletic therapists, physicians, physical therapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, nurses, and a psychologist. A total of 18 and 11 medical practitioners completed round 1 and 2 of the Delphi survey, respectively. 60/78 (77.0%) items reached agreement. Median treatment lengths by injury type were highest for patellofemoral pain syndromes (30.0 [IQR = 15.0-33.5] minutes) during initial visits and impingement injuries (25.0 [IQR = 14.0-30.0] minutes) during follow-up visits. Median treatment lengths by anatomical site were highest for back injuries during both initial (30.0 [IQR = 15.3-36.8] minutes) and follow-up visits (26.0 [IQR = 10.0-30.8] minutes). Almost all injuries were initially treated by physicians (100%) and physical therapists (97%), while nurses were involved with treating 39% of injuries. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlighted varying lengths of on-site injury treatment and the medical practitioners involved. When applied, findings can ensure protocols are efficient and well-structured. It can also inform the modelling of economic evaluations surrounding resource use in Canada Games and other Canadian sport organizations. This study is supported by VPR Canada Games grant and Brock University student fellowship." @default.
