- W4387052868 abstract "Recent innovation has led to the development of competition running shoes, referred to as “super-shoes”, designed to improve endurance running performance by reducing the energetic demands of running. While the performance benefits of “super-shoes” seem evident in men, no studies have assessed their metabolic benefits and joint mechanic responses in female runners. PURPOSE: To assess the influence of “super-shoes” on running economy and joint mechanics in competitive female runners. METHODS: Twelve competitive female runners (i.e., best 5 km under 22 min, 10 km under 47 min, or half marathon under 1hr44min) ran four 5-minute bouts on a force instrumented treadmill at 3.58 m·s-1 (i.e., 7min30sec per mile) in: 1) Nike Vaporfly Next% 2TM (SUPER) and 2) Nike Pegasus 38TM (CON) in a randomized and mirrored order. Paired t-tests (p ≤ 0.05) were used to compare the means of oxygen uptake (VO2), and ankle and metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint mechanics between shoe conditions. Cohen’s d effect sizes were computed to assess mean difference magnitudes. RESULTS: VO2 (p < 0.001; d = 1.5), peak MTP plantarflexion moment (p < 0.001; d = 1.6), peak MTP eccentric power (p < 0.001; d = 1.6), peak ankle plantarflexor moment (p = 0.001; d = 1.3), peak ankle concentric power (p < 0.001; d = 1.5), and peak ankle eccentric power (p = 0.04; d = 0.69) were all lower when running in SUPER compared to CON (Figure 1). CONCLUSIONS: As expected, running economy of competitive female runners was improved by ~3% in “super-shoes” which is consistent with most previous studies in male runners. The reduced mechanical demand at the ankle and MTP in “super-shoes” are also consistent with previous literature and may explain or contribute to the better economy observed in “super-shoes”. Given that both “super-shoes” and footstrike pattern influence MTP and ankle mechanics, future research should investigate how habitual strike pattern influences the degree of economy improvements from “super-shoes”." @default.
