- W4387052904 abstract "PURPOSE: Physical activity is recommended during pregnancy, and pregnancy health is sensitive to changes in lifestyle behaviors. Further, new evidence indicates high sedentary behavior (SED) in pregnancy is associated with adverse outcomes. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic impacted activity patterns in most of the population, with many adopting more SED. Therefore, our purpose was to examine differences in activity patterns across pregnancy prior to and during the COVID pandemic. METHODS: Participants (N = 205) were enrolled in one of two observational cohort studies prospectively measuring activity patterns across pregnancy in Pittsburgh, PA (“pre-COVID” cohort, n = 103 and “COVID” cohort, n = 102). Pre-COVID data were collected between 2017-2019, while COVID data were collected between 2021-2022 (when restrictions were less severe than at the pandemic’s outset). Steps and SED were measured with an activPAL thigh-mounted accelerometer over one week in each trimester. Demographic characteristics were compared between studies using ANOVA or chi-square tests. Trimester means were compared between studies after adjustment for waking wear time and differences in demographics using linear regression. RESULTS: Demographics (age, pre-pregnancy BMI, race/ethnicity, educational attainment, income, marital status, and insurance status) were similar between studies for all characteristics except income; pre-COVID participants reported lower income than COVID participants (p = 0.03). After adjusting for income and wear time, across trimesters, pre-COVID vs COVID participants had significantly higher steps (means within trimesters ranged from 7159-7790 vs. 5865-6926 steps/day; each p < 0.05) and significantly lower SED (9.51-9.69 vs. 9.98-10.09 hr/day; p < 0.05 in trimesters 2 and 3; p = 0.051 in trimester 1). DISCUSSION: Even after the easing of lockdown restrictions, pregnant participants measured during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic exhibited significantly fewer steps/day and more SED across pregnancy than those measured prior to the pandemic. This shift towards a more sedentary lifestyle during pregnancy may have adverse health implications for both mother and child. Prenatal care providers should emphasize and support participation in an active lifestyle in pregnancy in the context of pandemic challenges." @default.
