- W4387053419 abstract "PURPOSE: Ninja competitions consist of completing a series of obstacles that require upper body and grip strength, climbing, balance, and spurts of running and jumping. There is an emphasis on gripping, hanging, and swinging from a variety of implements (bars, rings, balls, cylinders, etc.) while navigating many of the obstacles which suggests that higher maximal grip strength and the ability to hang from these implements for sustained durations would have strong sport specificity. Currently, there is little research on this sport. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to test maximal hand grip strength and single arm hang duration in a youth ninja competition season, as well as to test grip strength while holding the dynamometer in a low position (standard) or an overhead position (sport specific). METHODS: Data were collected near the beginning (week 2) and end (week 12) of a 13-week competition season. After a brief warmup, the following were measured: height, weight, and hand grip strength in the low position (HGL), hand grip strength in the overhead position (HGO), and single arm hang (ARM) duration for dominant (D) and non-dominant (ND) hands. RESULTS: There was a total of 17 participants (male n = 11; age = 10.9 ± 1.9 years; Height = 57.1 ± 4.6 inches; Weight = 81.5 ± 16.2 pounds). There were no differences (p > 0.05) from beginning to end of season for HGL-D (20.0 ± 5.9 vs. 20.5 ± 5.6 kg), HGL-ND (20.2 ± 5.6 vs. 20.0 ± 5.6 kg), HGO-D (20.0 ± 6.6 vs. 20.3 ± 6.0 kg), HGO-ND (19.6 ± 5.2 vs. 19.7 ± 5.7 kg), ARM-D (21.8 ± 20.4 vs. 26.9 ± 18.5 seconds), and ARM-ND (19.9 ± 16.6 vs. 24.3 ± 16.5 seconds). There was variation in the percent change in hand grip (HGO-D: -11.2 to +14.0% and HGO-ND: -29.3 to +13.9%) and ARM duration (ARM-D: -54.2 to +415.8%; ARM-ND: -55.6 to 649.8%). There was also no difference in HGL vs. HGO at the end of the season (20.5 ± 5.6 vs. 20.3 ± 6.0 for dominant and 20.0 ± 5.6 vs. 19.7 ± 5.7 for non-dominant). CONCLUSION: The variation in grip strength and arm hang duration changes could be due to the short duration of the study, the participants’ range of ages (7.5-14.5) and physical maturity levels, and their training volume before and during the season. More data should be collected to detect potential improvements in physical capacity from ninja training, as well as the determinants of optimal performance in ninja competitions." @default.
