- W4387053571 abstract "INTRODUCTION: Surfing as an Olympian sport is an attractive as well as a challenging sport. Multifactorial analysis leading to performance is mandatory, once the venue being the ocean is in constant changing by natural influences. Adults, aging and young, as also children are engaging in such modality, and the main risk factors should be modulated to better understand the surfers profile worldwide. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to analyze health profile from young athletes competing in Amateur State Surfing Tour of São Paulo, the most leading competitive surfers in Brazil. METHODS: 43 young athletes (14 ± 5 years; 31 male, 12 female) were screened for main health risk factors on musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, metabolic, and overall matter. Overall self-report sleep, nutrition and physical fitness pattern were analyzed on a Likert scale (1-10). RESULTS: Overall health status were classified as 8.8, ranging from 7-10, Nutrition pattern 7.5 (ranging from 3-10) and sleep pattern 8.8 (ranging from 6-10). Strength and cardiorespiratory fitness were self-reported as 8.8 (ranging from 4-10) while flexibility 7.7 (3-10). 14% of athletes had muscular strain (100% needed more than 1 week no surfing to recover), tendinopathy issues were observed in 14% of athletes (75% more than 1 week without surfing) and 9 athletes (21%) had ligament injuries (being 7 on the lower limb). Lumbar pain was described in 6 athletes (14%). From all the 43 athletes analyzed, 1 uses everyday medication for anxiety. When asked about doping information, 32% had previous information as an athletic matter.79% of the surfers practice more than 5 days per week, 70% had more than 90 minutes sessions and 60% more than 1 session per day. 25% of the athletes reported COVID-19, being 93% vaccinated (81% with more than 1 shot) and 53% reported no adverse effects.2 athletes reported cardiovascular alteration (Heart Murmur), 1 reported asthma, none reported seizure and 1 previous fracture of the forearm. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the presence of previous known risk factors on competitive surfing, initial screening and continuous follow-up should focus on performance and health. The challenging demands of the athletes should be focus on a multifactorial matter, specially on the early stages of competitive surfing." @default.
