- W4387053889 abstract "Impaired cognitive function, specifically in the prefrontal/executive networks, is strongly associated with age-related motor deficits and fall risk. Neurorehabilitation through motor imagery (MI) training and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) may enhance motor function by inducing neuroplasticity. PURPOSE: To demonstrate the feasibility and observe the effects of MI training on locomotor learning in young, healthy populations, as well as the potential added benefit of prefrontal tDCS. METHODS: A double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled experimental study was performed with 38 healthy individuals assigned to one of three groups; Active (n = 12), Sham (n = 13), or Control (n = 13). All participants walked through a novel, cognitively demanding, 16-m obstacle course. Following the obstacle course, Active or Sham tDCS was delivered during the MI intervention for approximately 20 mins. In the Active group, a current with an intensity of 2.0 mA was applied. In the Sham group, a sham stimulation protocol was utilized. The Control group did not participate in the MI training. After the MI training, participants completed the course again. Premotor cortex oxygenated hemoglobin (O2Hb) levels, collected via functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and time to complete the course were assessed before, immediately after the MI training and, during the one-week follow-up. Repeated measures ANOVAs were used to determine group (Active, Sham, Control) × time (pre, post, 1-week) interaction effects for speed of course completion and O2Hb levels. RESULTS: From pretest to post-test, all groups slightly decreased O2Hb, indicating learning. At retention, O2Hb levels for Sham returned to baseline levels while the Active group showed a further decrease compared to Sham (∆O2Hb = -0.26 ± 0.49 vs 0.31 ± 0.97, p = .03).The Active group saw significant improvements in speed from the pretest to the post-test and at the one-week follow up (44 s vs. 39 s vs. 37 s.) The Sham and Control groups saw no significant changes in speed over time. CONCLUSION: Participation in a single session of MI training paired with Active tDCS led to improved motor outcomes and reduced O2Hb. Further, the use of tDCS led to longer retention of motor improvements." @default.
