- W4387054769 abstract "PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of Tai Chi on tactile sensation and proprioception among older adults of different age groups. METHODS: Thirty-seven older adults participated in the study. Thirteen aged 60-69 in the younger-old group (YOG) (7 females, 65.6 ± 1.0 years, 163.8 ± 8.6 cm, 63.3 ± 10.1 kg), 11 aged 70-79 in the middle-old group (MOG)(7 females, 73 ± 3.4 years, 158.7 ± 10.8 cm, 62.1 ± 9.0 kg), and 13 aged 80-89 in the older-old group (OOG) (8 females, 85.4 ± 2.6 years, 155.3 ± 2.8 cm, 61.1 ± 6.3 kg) completed 16 weeks of Tai Chi practice. Their proprioception thresholds of knee flexion/extension and ankle plantar/dorsiflexion, and cutaneous sensation thresholds at the great toe, first and fifth metatarsal heads, arch, and heel were measured at weeks 0 (W0) and 17 (W17). Mixed-model two-way ANOVAs or Scheirer-Ray-Hare tests were used for data analyses. RESULTS: Significant interactions were detected in tactile sensation on the fifth metatarsal head (p = 0.043) and proprioception during ankle plantarflexion (p < 0.001) and dorsiflexion (p = 0.004). No significant interactions were detected in MOG and YOG. The post-hoc tests indicated that tactile sensation thresholds at the fifth metatarsal head (W0: 4.5 ± 0.1 g, W17: 4.08 ± 0.15 g;p = 0.027, η2p = 0.169) and proprioception sensitivity of ankle plantarflexion (W0: 8.09 ± 0.73°, W17: 4.06 ± 0.67°; p < 0.001, η2p = 0.395) and dorsiflexion (W0: 6.89 ± 0.81°, W17: 3.31 ± 0.37°; p < 0.001, η2p = 0.273) decreased from week 0 to week 17 only in OOG, while remained unchanged in YOG and MOG. CONCLUSIONS: Tai Chi practice improved additional tactile and proprioception sensations among older adults aged over 80 years." @default.
