- W4387054770 abstract "PURPOSE: To investigate load-velocity (L-V) profile changes following a whole-body high volume-load RT session in hot and temperate conditions. METHODS: Eight resistance-trained males completed a high volume-load RT protocol under heated (HOT: 40 °C; 40% relative humidity [RH]) and temperate (TEMP:21 °C; 40% RH) conditions in a randomized crossover design. Participants performed 4 sets of 10 repetitions at 70% 1RM with 2-3 min rest for the following exercises in order: deadlift (DL), bench press (BP), bent-over row, split squat, shoulder press, and biceps curls. The L-V profile was formed by collecting peak velocity data at 40, 60, 80, and 90% of one repetition maximum (1RM) for the BP and DL pre- and post-RT. Separate two-way (time [Pre, Post]) x condition [HOT, TEMP]) repeated measures ANOVAs were used to assess changes of the L-V profile. RESULTS: There was a large condition-time interaction effect whereby 60% 1RM DL peak velocity decreased more in HOT vs. TEMP post-RT (HOT: Pre; 1.56 ± 0.29 vs. Post; 1.35 ± 0.22 m.s-1; TEMP: Pre; 1.51 ± 0.33 vs. Post; 1.45 ± 0.26 m.s-1, p = 0.02, ηp2 = 0.58). A large condition-time interaction for 40% 1RM BP peak velocity occurred whereby TEMP velocity increased with no change in HOT (TEMP: Pre; 1.03 ± 0.13 vs. Post; 1.37 ± 0.15 m.s-1, HOT: Pre; 1.51 ± 0.17 vs. Post; 1.43 ± 0.15 m.s-1, p < 0.01, ηp2 = 0.93), although pre-RT differences influenced this interaction (p < 0.01). For 60% 1RM, BP peak velocity decreased over time in both conditions (HOT: Pre; 1.01 ± 0.13 vs. Post; 0.95 ± 0.10 m.s-1, TEMP: Pre; 1.00 ± 0.13 vs. Post; 0.91 ± 0.13 m.s-1, p = 0.04, ηp2 = 0.48). Regardless of time, 80% 1RM BP velocity was higher in HOT vs. TEMP (HOT: Pre; 0.70 ± 0.18 vs. Post; 0.61 ± 0.16 m.s-1, TEMP: Pre; 0.59 ± 0.12 vs. Post; 0.59 ± 0.12 m.s-1, p = 0.03, ηp2 = 0.53). CONCLUSION: Muscular performance after high load-volume RT in the heat evokes load specific alterations in upper body (improved) and lower body (impaired) peak velocity.
