- W4387061237 abstract "Lower extremity performance tests and range of motion (ROM) assessments have commonly been used to examine athletic performance in baseball pitchers and used in predictive models of pitching metrics. The lumbopelvic region connects the lower extremities with the upper torso, while energy flow through this region has been positively associated with pitching performance. Studying this relationship of performance tests with energy flow through the pelvis may enhance our understanding of pitching performance. PURPOSE: To examine the relationship of athlete performance metrics and energy flow through the drive hip, stride hip, and lumbosacral joints during baseball pitching. METHODS: Performance metrics from countermovement jump (CMJ), squat jump (SJ), isometric mid-thigh pull (IMTP), and trunk ROM tests were collected from a sample of collegiate and pro players (n = 179). Fastball pitching kinematics and kinetics were recorded using a 3D motion capture system while pitchers threw on an instrumented mound to obtain ground reaction force (GRF) data. Multiple regression analyses were used to examine relationships between performance and energy flow variables. Model performance was assessed using the root mean square error (RMSE) and the coefficient of determination (R2). RESULTS: Mean pitch velocity was 40.0 ± 2.2 m/s. A linear combination of CMJ power, eccentric CMJ rate of force development, peak CMJ eccentric force, and SJ power was found to predict energy generated (160 ± 57 J) by the drive hip to within an RMSE of 49.5 J (R2 = 0.25, p < .001). Similarly, CMJ power, peak CMJ concentric force, SJ jump height, SJ power, peak IMTP force, and trunk ROM combined to predict energy absorbed (105 ± 42 J) by the stride hip to within an RMSE of 37.4 J (R2 = 0.22, p < .001). CONCLUSION: During pitching, proper sequencing of the kinetic chain has identified energy flow through the drive leg to the pelvis during the stride phase and from the pelvis to the stride leg and trunk during the arm-cocking phase. Utilizing athletic performance testing this analysis identified key metrics associated with proper energy flow through the lumbopelvic region." @default.
