- W4387061321 abstract "Continuing-care retirement communities (CCRC) faced almost impossible challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic: defending a vulnerable population against infection while protecting their mental and physical health. While studies have shown that the geriatric population has an increased fall risk and these age-related changes can be mitigated with physical activity, COVID-19 provided unprecedented obstacles. CCRCs had to implement programs quickly and adjust them frequently to align with developing recommendations to support residents in a changing scenario. PURPOSE: To evaluate activity interventions implemented during the COVID-19 lockdown by a CCRC and their impact on five-repetition sit-to-stand test (5STS) and stride length (SL). METHODS: Measurements from 12 participants (833 years) pre- and post-COVID lockdown were collected for SL from an electronic walkway and 5STS time. CCRC physical activity and wellness interventions were gathered through interviews and review of promotional materials. RESULTS: 5STS time improved (MD = -1.25 sec, p = 0.126) and SL decreased (MD = -4.09 cm, p = 0.136) from pre- to post-COVID lockdown. Analysis of interventions the CCRC implemented during the lockdown was conducted to contextualize these findings. Initially, staff recorded exercise videos and sent a weekly newsletter highlighting health and wellness offerings. Later, outdoor exercise stations were added to reduce virus transmission. Exercise options ranged from mobility to balance basics, core, strength, resistance band, Tai Chi, and seated options so that residents could choose what best accommodated their mobility status. Loosening guidelines allowed for the health center and pool reopening with limited capacity and masking requirements. During this period, participants denied falls and reported increased walking and/or utilization of at least one class offering. CONCLUSION: Diversity of activity interventions provided by the CCRC promoted exercise adherence and enabled residents to potentially reduce fall risk during the pandemic. Along with increased activity, shorter SL and faster 5STS indicated greater stability and lower limb strength, respectively. COVID-19 complicates the implementation of wellness initiatives but does not make goals unattainable when resources are widespread." @default.
