- W4387061657 abstract "Stress elicited by exercise, dehydration and the environment threaten the health and safety of active individuals. The compensatory reserve index (CRI) categorizes hypoperfusion on a scale (0-1.0) predicting remaining reserves of blood volume before compensation is diminished. CRI’s ability to detect stress surrounding exercise in the heat is not fully understood. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of CRI in detecting stress from exercise, heat, and dehydration. METHODS: Twenty-two active participants (45% men) age (mean ± standard deviation): 23 ± 4 years participated in a randomized cross-over study. Four trials were conducted: 1) temperate conditions (24 °C and 55% relative humidity (rH)) and hydrated (TH), 2) temperate and dehydrated (TD), 3) extreme heat (35 °C and 55% rH) and hydrated (HH), 4) extreme heat and dehydrated (HD). For TH and DH, participants arrived and remained hydrated throughout the trial. For TD and HD participants arrived and remained dehydrated throughout the trial; upon completion, participants were rehydrated. Participants completed 3, 45-minute bouts of exercise on a treadmill separated by 15 minutes of rest. A portable finger clip continually assessed CRI (AU). Pre-trial, post-trial and post-rehydration vitals were assessed in a supine position. A 4x4 condition by time repeated measures ANOVA was conducted evaluating CRI. A separate 2x5 repeated measures ANOVA was conducted evaluating CRI following rehydration for TD and HD. Mean difference (MD) was calculated. RESULTS: Pre-trial CRI values were not altered between the four conditions (p > 0.05). Post-trial, CRI was more stable in TH vs. HH (MD:0.262 AU, p = 0.008), HD (0.442 AU, p < 0.001), and TD (0.195 AU, p = 0.016). TD was not diminished vs. HH (0.068 AU, p = 1.000) but was more stable compared to HD (0.248 AU, p = 0.008). HH was not diminished vs. HD (0.180 AU, p = 0.110). Following rehydration, CRI was more stable in TD vs. HD (0.142 AU, p = 0.026). TD following rehydration was not diminished vs. TD pre-trial (-0.024 AU, p = 1.000); HD following rehydration was not diminished vs. HD pre-trial (-0.157, p = 0.241). CONCLUSIONS: Changes in CRI are likely distinguishable between environments; immediate rehydration demonstrated dramatic recovery of CRI. CRI monitoring may be utilized to assess cumulative stress elicited by exercise in heat." @default.
