- W4387061838 abstract "BACKGROUND: Ideal training for improving running economy is loaded plyometric training (LPT) because it couples the hypertrophic benefits of strength training and the mimicking of the neuromuscular characteristics of running. Due to the oscillatory characteristics of the tsunami barbell (TB), it could provide a possible solution to current limitations found while studying the effects of LPT on running economy (RE). PURPOSE: To determine the effects of loaded plyometric training on RE while using the TB in comparison to the Olympic Barbell (OB) in untrained recreational runners. METHODS: Two cohorts completed four consecutive weeks of LPT. The control group using OB (n = 9) and an experimental group using TB (n = 7). A preliminary RE test was performed prior to initiation of the training regimen, and a second RE test was performed upon completion of the training regimen. RE testing was conducted at 134 m/min with a treadmill on a 1% grade. Results between OB and TB groups were then compared using a two-way ANOVA. RESULTS: OB and TB groups showed no differences at baseline testing in RE (38.1 + 4.7 vs 37.5 + 3.8 ml/kg/min) and reported similar RPE values during training (p > 0.05). After four weeks of training, a two-way ANOVA (Time x Treatment) revealed a significant simple effect for time (p < 0.01) but showed no significant interaction and no difference between group means (36.3 + 4.8 vs 35.0 + 3.3 ml/kg/min) post training (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Completion of four consecutive weeks of loaded plyometric training using the TB and OB yielded positive improvement in recreational runners. However, improvements did not favor one group over the other. This suggests that, while loaded plyometric training improves running economy, TB training does not provide a significant benefit in improving running economy at a submaximal intensity, compared to similar training done with an olympic barbell." @default.
