- W4387061846 abstract "PURPOSE: Rugby Union is a high-intensity invasion game with risk of injury. Global and national governing bodies continue to prioritize the development of strategies aimed at reducing injuries, and research in this area is paramount. A warm-up intervention aimed at reducing injuries, tailored to a specific target cohort (Irish adult amateur) was designed and measured for feasibility. METHODS: The injury reduction program (intervention) structure has three phases and for this feasibility trial it was performed before trainings and matches. The program was designed using historical injury trends across three competitive seasons; focus group data collected from players, coaches and practitioners; input from experts in sports medicine, performance and coaching; and evidence-supported international best practice. Following a season-long controlled trial with a prospective cohort design, primary outcomes were measured using Likert-type scale ratings relating to program acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility. Secondary outcomes included a comparison of >24 hour time-loss match injury incidence rates between control (CON) and intervention (INT) groups. RESULTS: A total of 21 amateur community clubs comprising of 838 players recorded injury epidemiology data for the full 2021-2022 rugby season. There were 5 clubs in the intervention group [3 women’s, 2 men’s] and 16 clubs in the control group [1 women’s, 15 men’s]. Primary outcomes. Program ratings from INT clubs: 100% completely agree or agree for acceptability; 95% completely agree or agree for appropriateness; 95% completely agree or agree for feasibility. Secondary outcomes. There were fewer hamstring strains in the intervention vs control clubs: 1.1/1000 player-hours (95% CI 0.3-4.2) vs 4.6/1000 player-hours (95% CI 3.3-6.6). CONCLUSIONS: The intervention was found to be highly acceptable, appropriate, and feasible in adult amateur Rugby Union clubs in Ireland. The program’s successful design using three pillars of support (quantitative, qualitative, best-practices) offers applied researchers and practitioners in sport a framework to develop future interventions. Data suggests use of the warm-up intervention reduces the rate of in-game hamstring strain injuries throughout a competitive season." @default.
