- W4387061898 abstract "Monitoring variables associated with performance in sport has become ubiquitous during the last few years. Measures range from anthropometric to motor performance and fitness variables. However, monitoring these variables without a clear understanding of how they manifest during the training process is not fully documented. Thus, it is important to examine the relationships between training stimuli at different points during training and competition. PURPOSE: To compare the performance on different sport related variables in collegiate female volleyball players during the playing season and off season. METHODS: Participants were twenty-two college-aged female volleyball players (Height = 176.6 ± 6.77 cm, Weight = 71.9 ± 5.2 kg) comprising different cohorts of the same institution’s team across five years. Players were monitored on the same variables three times (TEST) during the Preparatory (PREP) and Competitive (COMP) seasons as part of the training process. Variables measured were body mass (MASS), percent fat (%FAT), vertical jump (VJ), vertical jump with approach (VJA), sit-ups (S/U), agility (AGIL), speed (SPD), leg power (PWR), aerobic fitness (AER), and measures of arm [bench press (BP), lat. pull (LP)] and leg strength [squat (SQ), leg curl (LC)]. A two factor ANOVA (season/test) was conducted to compare the variables at three different times each season. RESULTS: There were significant main effects for season on AGIL F (1,238) = 7.71, p = .006 and SPD F (1,241) = 4.79, p = .030, AER F (1,144) = 10.29, p = .002; with AGIL and SPD being faster in season than off season, and AER being lower in season. Additional main effects were found for TEST on S/U F (2, 222) = 4.59, p = .011, VJA F (2,219) = 3.38, p = .036, BP F (2,226) = 7.20, p = <.001, SQ F (2,157) = 4.97, p = .008, LP F (2,234) = 7.26, p = <.001 and LC F (2,234) = 7.63, p = <.001. with all being higher on the third test session vs the first. There were no significant effects for MASS, %FAT, VJ, and PWR. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that changes in motor performance and fitness variables may be affected differentially by the amount, intensity, and frequency of training. Understanding the dynamics of these fluctuations will help in adjusting the training process to enable better results." @default.
