- W4387062009 abstract "PURPOSE: With Covid, there was an increase in golfers walking during play, partially due to the premise that golf was an effective exercise. Does the original premise that golf is a walking game also lead to participants playing better when walking? Can the walking modes of golf play add to health or fitness? METHODS: Of the ten subjects (n = Ten), six males and four females, all were regular golfers and walked during play at least 50% of golf time. Using a portable metabolic system, subjects played 9-hole rounds using a motor cart (MC), pushcart (PC), and electric trolley (ET). Data points recorded included O2/VO2, heart rate, psychological focus, and actual score for each trial. Results: Energy Expenditure was calculated as VO2 ml/kg/min and average kcal per hour. The MC play had the least average expenditure of the three modes of transport and play (8.90 ml/kg/min), followed by the ET (9.88 ml/kg/min), and the PC (12.11 ml/kg/min), p = 0.00528. Heart rate and converted kcal per hour mimicked this relationship. When mental focus, on the 10-point scale rated by participants, as compared to the mode of play, the walking modes were significantly better than the MC, 6.15/10 versus 5.01, p = 0.01482. CONCLUSION: Even though not a moderate-intensity activity, MC play can result in health benefits due to the total EE. Walking while playing had better potential health effects while improving positive focus and scoring benefits compared to a motor cart. From this study, golf in the walking modes, ET and PC, is a moderate-intensity physical activity, resulting in health benefits, and enhanced fitness for those with lower initial fitness levels." @default.
