- W4387062014 abstract "PURPOSE: This study explored the prevalence of Olympic and Paralympic athletes exceeding scoring thresholds (“flagging”) on the Sport Mental Health Assessment Tool (SMHAT-1). METHODS: 1059 athletes completed the SMHAT-1 where they completed the following questionnaires: Athlete Psychological Strain Questionnaire (APSQ), General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD7), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ9), Athlete Sleep Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ), Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test Consumption (AUDIT-C), Brief Eating Disorders in Athletes Questionnaire (BEDA-Q), and Cutting Down, Annoyance by Criticism, Guilty Feeling, and Eye-openings Adapted to Include Drugs (CAGE-AID). Descriptive summary statistics were used to characterize the mental health of the participating sample based on established thresholds for each questionnaire. In addition, χ2 test of independence analyses compared the rate of flagging between male and female and Olympic and Paralympic athletes. RESULTS: Overall, 88.5% of athletes (male, 84.9%; female, 91.7%; Olympic, 88.2%; Paralympic, 92.4%) flagged on at least one questionnaire of the SMHAT-1. The percent of athletes flagging on each individual questionnaire of the SMHAT-1 varied: APSQ (29.6%), GAD7 (3.8%), PHQ9 (2.0%), ASSQ (16.2%), AUDIT-C (33.2%), CAGE-AID (1.1%), BEDA-Q (49.1%). A greater percentage of Paralympic athletes flagged on the APSQ (54.4%, p < 0.001), GAD7 (11.4%, p < 0.001), and PHQ9 (6.3%, p = 0.014) than their Olympic athlete counterparts (27.6%, 3.2%, and 1.6%, respectively). Further, a greater percentage of female athletes flagged on the APSQ (36.2%, p < 0.001), GAD7 (2.9%, p < 0.001), PHQ9 (2.9%, p = 0.047), and BEDA-Q (51.6%, p = 0.002) than their male athlete counterparts (22.2%, 1.2%, 1.0%, and 46.5%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Within this sample of Olympic and Paralympic athletes, 88.5% exceeded thresholds on at least one component of the SMHAT-1 screen and were subsequently evaluated by one of the Team USA mental health providers. Given the variability observed between male and female athletes and Olympic and Paralympic athletes, using a screening tool to assess potential mental health concerns among athletes, such as the SMHAT-1, can be an effective method of early identification and subsequent referral to appropriate healthcare providers." @default.
