- W4387062068 abstract "Upwards of 60% of people living with HIV (PWH) in the US are active smokers; a rate 2-3 times higher than the general population and other clinical populations. Despite several attempts (e.g., counseling, pharmacotherapy) to help PWH quit smoking, long-term abstinence rates are low. Researchers, tobacco treatment specialists, and former smokers advocate for exercise as an aid to smoking cessation, yet no research has focused on using exercise to help PWH quit smoking. PURPOSE: To perform secondary analyses of a large randomized controlled trial that assessed the effects of 12-weeks of resistance training (i.e., weightlifting; RT) (2 times/week) compared to a time-matched contact control (CC) on smoking cessation in PWH. METHODS: HIV+ sedentary adult smokers who self-reported smoking at least 5 cigarettes/day for the past 12 months, and who were not currently trying to quit, were randomized. Changes in cigarettes smoked on an average day, carbon monoxide (CO) levels, and nicotine dependence from baseline to follow-up (week 13) were analyzed using independent and paired samples t-tests. Chi-squared tests were used to determine the relationship between treatment group and being a smoker or non-smoker at follow-up. RESULTS: 19 PWH (12 male, 6 female, 1 transgender male; CC = 10, RT = 9) were included. The average age was 53.80 (SD = 6.90, Range = 45-70) years and approximately 84% (n = 16) identified as Black/African American. Participants in both groups attended approximately 73% of study sessions (17/24), and retention at follow-up was 88% for RT and 80% for CC. Average cigarettes/day and CO level at baseline was 15.68 (SD = 7.58, Range = 7-30) and 15.32 (SD = 7.46, Range = 3-28 ppm), respectively. Both groups significantly reduced cigarettes/day (RT = 83.10% reduction vs CC = 74.06% reduction; ps < .01), and the RT group had a significant reduction in nicotine dependence compared to the CC group from pre to post (p < .01). There were no changes in CO levels (ps > .05) and only two participants quit smoking (1/group). CONCLUSIONS: Reductions in cigarettes/day and nicotine dependence suggest that RT may be a feasible smoking cessation method for PWH. Fully powered studies that continue to assess the effects of RT as an aid to smoking cessation and the mechanisms that can help explain such effects can increase life-expectancy in PWH." @default.
