- W4387062275 abstract "Physical fitness and body composition measures have been reported in collegiate lacrosse (LAX) players. Yet, we are unaware of any studies that have reported fitness and body composition characteristics in high school LAX players and examined the relationship between these measures. PURPOSE: To describe fitness and body composition characteristics and determine relationships between these measures in male high school LAX players. METHODS: 58 male high school LAX players (16.2 ± 1.2y; 179.8 ± 7.3 cm; 76.3 ± 10.2 kg) from two private high schools underwent dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and fitness assessments before the start of their 2022 season. DXA characteristics included total body fat percentage (BF%), and lean mass measures for total body, leg, and arm segments. Handgrip strength (HGS) was measured bilaterally with a handgrip dynamometer. Lower body power was assessed by a countermovement jump (CMJ) using a Just Jump mat. Upper body power was assessed by the medicine ball put (MBP) test using a 9 kg medicine ball. For all tests, 3 trials were performed with the best attempt used for analysis. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and Pearson product-moment correlation analyses were performed between body composition and fitness measures. RESULTS: Mean total BF% was 18.63 ± 4.05% while lean mass averages for total, leg, and arm segments were 59.02 ± 7.47, 20.23 ± 2.89, and 7.62 ± 1.23 kg, respectively. Average R/L grip strength was 42.41 ± 8.07 kg. Average CMJ height was 58.80 ± 9.19 cm while MBP distance was 502.3 ± 77.37 cm. Total BF% showed a negative correlation with CMJ (r = -0.49; p < 0.001). Positive correlations were found between total lean mass and MBP (r = 0.69; p < 0.001), HGS (r = 0.66; p < 0.001), and CMJ (r = 0.43; p < 0.001). Positive correlations were found between leg lean mass and HGS (r = 0.64; p < 0.001), MBP (r = 0.63; p < 0.001), and CMJ height (r = 0.40; p = 0.003). Arm lean mass showed positive correlations with HGS (r = 0.71; p < 0.001), MBP (r = 0.68; p < 0.001), and CMJ (r = 0.53; p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Body composition measures were related to strength and power characteristics in male high school LAX players. These data may assist strength and conditioning practitioners with developing training programs for high school LAX players." @default.
