- W4387063669 abstract "In this work the evolution of the utilization of small satellites for land Earth observation missions is addressed. Scatter and “bubble” plots, supplemented by the calculation of correlation coefficients for pairs of selected variables, are used to identify, qualify and quantify trends. Optical and Synthetic Aperture RADAR (SAR) missions are considered separately. Systems are discriminated as single or constellation, and commercial or government owned. Trends coupling satellite mass to ground sample distance, and number of spectral bands, for optical satellites, and spatial resolution and microwave band for SARs, are also analyzed. The present analysis indicates that smallsats seems to be getting increasingly competitive, that is, they have become an alternative to bigger satellites, for most types of optical missions. On the other hand, the SAR arena still seems to pose a big challenge to satellite miniaturization, in spite of recent remarkable advances obtained on the fielding of smallsat X-band SAR constellations." @default.
