- W4387101967 abstract "Historically the longest network of trade routes in the world, the Silk Road served as a bridge between East and West, facilitating trade and fostering religious, cultural and technological exchange. Nowadays, the revival of the Silk Road offers a wide and rich array of destinations and emerging tourism products, providing visitors the opportunity to experience a unique network of destinations linked by a common history and encompassing many countries with a diverse range of economies, policies, societies and cultures. Greece is historically linked to the Silk Road countries due to its strategic location at the east–west crossroads. This article focuses on Thessaloniki, the metropolitan center of northern Greece, a major transportation node and commercial hub on the Silk Routes, with diachronic links with the Silk Road countries. These relationships are also reflected in the city’s exhibition events, which attract participants from Silk Road countries, who also act as leisure tourists. In this perspective, the methodological approach of the research focuses on the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), the largest exhibition event in Greece, to examine the visitor flows of exhibitions from the Silk Road countries since the 1920s. The aim of the study is to examine the exhibition participation of Silk Road countries in TIF thematic exhibitions, to highlight alternative visitation patterns based on the common Silk Road heritage and contemporary exhibition trade fairs. The research adopts a twofold perspective, addressing the chronological and the country visitor analysis. The examination of Silk Road countries participating at TIF allowed to identify various visiting patters proposed such as tourism flows of high, medium and low frequency. Therefore, the patterns proposed can be used as a tool to systematically organise and further develop a wide range of exhibition tourism programs, policy and planning goals through continuous networking and collaboration among Silk Road countries to further enhance Silk Road tourism development." @default.
