- W4387110880 abstract "The aim of this chapter is to provide a literary map of the rural areas which in 1880–1910 gave rise to the largest migration influx to Britain, while showing how the Italians first perceived and adapted to great cities such as London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Glasgow. The rich corpus of Italian British narratives will of course be crucial in this transnational journey through time and existence. The opening section will be dedicated to some of the poorest regions in central-southern Italy and to the province of Parma in Emilia Romagna. Blending family memories with (generally) clear geographical information and materials, the literary narratives in this corpus display the natural and artistic beauties of small villages such as Picinisco, Viticuso, Barga and Bardi. Progressively abandoned after the unification of Italy in 1861, today they represent important reference points for the Italian community in Britain. Showing the key destinations in this migration process, also the places in Britain, the Isle of Man and Canada where numerous Italian British authors were detained until the end of the Second World War, this chapter will also supplement the meagre historical research on British internment camps such as Warth Mills and Woodhouselea. As regards the concluding section, “Aftermath,” it will focus on the reconstruction period, thus on the areas in the three British regions where, after 1945, the protagonists of Italian British narratives finally completed their process of integration." @default.
