- W4387110957 abstract "After providing a clear literary picture of the historical and geographical traits of Italian migration to Britain, this chapter will focus on the long and difficult path of Italian migrants towards social recognition and integration. The earliest memoir in this literary corpus, Eugenio D’Agostino’s Wandering Minstrel (1938) has shown the complex dynamics between the padroni—the older members of the community, who already owned their businesses—and their young lavoranti, who worked for and completely depended on them. It was only in the inter-war years that the majority of these lavoranti became experienced confectioners, fish fryers and hoteliers who ran their own shops and lived a decent life with their families. Yet, the turning point in this long path towards social recognition and integration was represented by their final acquisition of a higher level of education. Drawing upon the numerous memoirs which are discussed in this volume, we will see that after the Second World War the Italians, especially the younger generations, diversified their activities, thus contributing to the cultural and artistic growth of Britain." @default.
