- W4387136910 abstract "Abstract This chapter explains how episcopal leadership came to be firmly established in Britain and Ireland after 1830 through examining the three hierarchies of Ireland, Scotland, and England and Wales. It explores the means and the culture through which clerical authority more broadly was exercised with increasing vigour, noting at the same time where it was more limited. The role of synods and episcopal meetings in the definition of pastoral leadership is explored while the growing importance of loyalty to the figure of the pope and acceptance of an expanded papal authority was a significant unifying force within a practice of leadership which was varied at both individual and national levels. While challenges and limits of episcopal control continued to be a reality on the ground, the direction of travel was one of increased lay deference and increased control, as is shown, for example, in relation to religious orders and congregations." @default.
