- W4387148297 abstract "The ridge-furrow supplementary irrigation (RFI) system is an important method to improve water use efficiency (WUE), thus alleviate water shortage. However, appropriate amounts of supplementary irrigation in wheat production in Loess Plateau of China remain unclear. Therefore, a three-year field experiment was performed with five treatments to determine the appropriate amount of RFI system in Loess Plateau irrigation area to maximize winter wheat yield. Taking local full-irrigation flat planting (FP) as the control, a ridge–furrow plastic film mulching system was combined with four supplemental irrigation amounts: 0% crop evapotranspiration (ETC) (RFI0), 30% ETC (RFI30), 55% ETC (RFI55), and 80% ETC (RFI80). The RFI system significantly promoted leaf area index, dry matter, and prolonged the growth period. Treatments of RFI30, RFI55, and RFI80 increased grain yield (GY) by 56.2%, 86.2%, and 88.6%, respectively, and increased WUE by 11.8%, 17.8%, and 6.7% compared with RFI0, with the maximum GY and WUE under RFI55, and no significant difference between RFI55 and RFI80. Although FP had equal GY to RFI30, this came at the cost of high crop water consumption and low WUE. To determine the optimal amount of supplementary irrigation, we established a “linear-plus-plateau” model to describe the relationship between GY and water input (precipitation and irrigation). The results showed that the yield was the highest when the irrigation amount was 53.1% ETC. In conclusion, considering the GY and WUE, we recommend that winter wheat should be irrigated at 53.1% ETC under RFI system in Loess Plateau." @default.
