It traces the independent efforts of two women: Ryam Nearing in Oregon and Deborah Anapol in the Bay Area. It argues that both women created small organizations that united networks of ethical non-monogamists on the West Coast throughout the 1980s. Nearing relied on the Keristan notion of polyfidelity, believing that lifelong group marriages provided the benefits of monogamy and promiscuity with the pitfalls of neither. Anapol also appealed to commitment and religion, basing her sexual ethics in New Age spirituality. In the late 1980s, the two began working together.
